About Cassidy Harris
Cassidy has been writing for the Pioneer Log as soon as she stepped on campus during her freshman year. Starting her Pioneer Log career writing for The Backdoor and news, she began to focus on writing (usually politically-charged) articles for the opinion section. Now as a sophomore, she has joined the Pioneer Log team as an opinion editor. As an editor, she hopes to diversify student voices represented in the opinion section and allow the Pioneer Log platform to support lesser-heard or marginalized groups on campus. Cassidy is an International Affairs major and a History minor. In her free time, you can catch her tutoring English in the ILC, looking at plants in Tryon or watching any show about ghosts and cryptids.

BACKDOOR | Editor disappointed 420 festivities not BACKDOOR | Editor disappointed 420 festivities not for her • By Maya Mazor-Hoofien

On April 20, the city of Portland exploded in holiday celebration. Lewis & Clark students gathered in observance, in a commemoration that was a welcome break from finals plagiarism and publicly crying in the silent section on the third floor of Aubrey R. Watzek library.

What, you may be asking, were these students celebrating? Well, dear reader, with my honed journalistic senses and Jewish aptitude for gossip, I wondered the same. I grabbed my spiral-bound reporter notebook, donned my Mossy Log baseball cap (available for purchase last semester! Sorry, you snooze, you lose), and ventured out to get to the bottom of this story.

ARTS | “Two Layers Away” gallery exhibit featu ARTS | “Two Layers Away” gallery exhibit features senior art • By J Frank

On Friday April 14, as part of the Festival of Scholars and Artists, the on-campus Hoffman Gallery debuted “Two Layers Away,” an exhibition of seniors’ art. Lewis & Clark’s graduating visual artists have joined forces to present this final project, making creative use of various styles and mediums to fill the space.

“Two Layers Away” was named for the way the different artworks explore the subversive messages and overlapping meanings and associations that lie below the surface of a work, whether visible or implicit. The exhibit will be open to the community through May 7, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day except Mondays.

As graduation looms closer, Venus Edlin reflects o As graduation looms closer, Venus Edlin reflects on time at Lewis & Clark, The Mossy Log newspaper • By Venus Edlin

After graduating, some of my most important and fondest memories will be associated with this newspaper. I have learned so much about this institution — for better and worse — through my journalistic pursuits. I will also forever cherish the late nights designing the paper with those who share the same passion.

Most importantly, The Mossy Log has been a personal test of persistence and a pivotal example of the success that will bring. Given my position in this society, I know I will need to continue embodying this trait in order to have the kind of life I believe I deserve, as well as bettering the lives of others.

NEWS | Cross country, track teams scrutinize coach NEWS | Cross country, track teams scrutinize coach’s behavior • By Asmaa Zaidan

Head Cross Country Coach, Interim Track & Field Head Coach and President of the Division III U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Executive Committee for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Matthew Barreau, has recently been the center of multiple reports of Title IX violations.

Barreau declined to comment, deferring to the athletics department.

Current and former athletes as well as assistant coaches describe his three-year tenure at Lewis & Clark as creating a “male-dominated” team environment. Multiple team members claim that Barreau said inappropriate gendered and racialized comments, mismanaged the teams and undermined female coaches.

BACKDOOR | Someone call 911! My roommate is unresp BACKDOOR | Someone call 911! My roommate is unresponsive & starting to turn gray • By Noah Reese-Clauson

College: the time of our lives right? When I came to Lewis & Clark, I expected the movies. I expected beer pong and parties. I expected to be lifelong friends with my freshman year roommate. In typical form, life gave me part of what I expected, but not in the way I expected it. My life is a movie — a horror movie.

My roommate is named Peter. Peter… something. I do not know much about Peter Something, but I typically spend seven unconscious hours in a room with him along with a few less pleasant, waking ones. The trouble seems to be a lack of connection.

“How are you?” I said today after classes. Peter declined to comment.
