Clubs offer low-stress recreation

At Lewis & Clark, it can be easy for varsity athletes to steal the spotlight. However, a growing number of students have found themselves drawn to the school’s club sports scene. These student-led teams provide opportunities for everyone, from experienced athletes to those just looking to try something new.

Club sports offer the great benefits of camaraderie, fitness and competition without the same intensity that varsity can come with.

“It’s not only a fantastic way to meet people and bond over a sport, it’s also great for exercise.” Uri Boaz ’27 said about the men’s ultimate frisbee team, Bacchus.

The sense of community that comes with these teams is a big draw to these sport clubs.

“Bacchus is a family,” Boaz said.

For first years in a new place, this sense of belonging is strongly desired. Evan Azinger ’28 recently joined the team and to get involved in his new college community.

“I was never able to join in school because of some personal reasons,” said Azinger. “It feels nice to be part of a community.”

While our varsity athletes deserve their flowers, sports should be something everyone can enjoy. For students like Boaz and Azinger, club sports allow that enjoyment.

For students already involved in a varsity team, these clubs can allow them to continue to pursue their interests and meet new people outside their usual sport. Mack Searle ’28 is on the women’s lacrosse team and also participates in the club rugby team.

“I’ve done sports my entire life and I want to keep doing them,” said Searle.

Where ultimate frisbee and rugby are recognized club sports, other athletic opportunities at LC come in the form of regular clubs. Volleyball, tennis, pugilism, ski and snowboard, kayaking and pickleball are all existing clubs, offering an even more laid-back approach to community and athletics for first-time participants.

Club sports are a staple of athletics at LC, with Bacchus even making it to Nationals at USA Ultimate last year. With the ability to exercise, compete and build community, it is no wonder LC’s club sports scene is so popular. As more students look to balance their academic commitments with an active and social campus life, club sports provide an ideal outlet. Whether you are an experienced player or a beginner looking for a new hobby, these teams offer a chance to stay active, compete and make lasting friendships.
